Westbrook School opened for the 2005-2006 school year as an elementary school. There were three sections of each primary grade and two sections of each intermediate level. Between 350 students attended school the first day. The boundary lines between Westbrook and Hillside Elementary Schools were redrawn and Westbrook administration and staff began community building among parents and students of the two schools. To begin the process of community building a Carnival was held before school started so that parents and students could view the school and meet the staff. In addition to classroom staff Westbrook had a full-time music and P.E. teachers as well as a full-time guidance counselor. Part-time staff at Westbrook, were Spanish, media, art, band, strings, and a school psychologist.
The next year the number of students attending Westbrook increased. We were quickly becoming a three-section school. During the 2006-2007 school year an additional fourth and fifth grade classroom were added. The only grade with two sections was grade six. About 375 students were attending Westbrook during the school year. Also during this year a four-year old program was piloted at Westbrook. The four-year old program follows the same daily time schedule and calendar as the rest of the school. About 30 students attended this pilot program. One lead teacher and two assistant teachers began the pilot program.
The 2007-2008 school year brought the completion of Westbrook becoming a three-section school. This brought the attendance of the school to 400 students. The current year, 2008-2009, while there are three sections of each grade level, the attendance is currently about 440 students. Many new events have been added for student participation. We have a walking club that meets on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday mornings. In addition we had the first annual staff versus sixth grade volleyball game. Other programs are currently being discussed and will probably be added soon. Students and staff continue to work hard at building community among those who attend Westbrook Elementary School.
